Our third night in a row and the fourth in total at the Platja de Trabucador on the Port dels Alfacs and it must have been the best sunrise of the holiday so far with a sky ablaze in reds and purples:) It had sounded breezy in the night but a lot of that is the noise of the surf but the wind had changed direction from cross on from the left to dead onshore and a bit on the nippy side too! As its Monday not, many campervans stopped the night just the usual 40 footers passing to collect salt! Our weird German neighbours were still there sleeping in their Mercedes Estate with big solar panels and loads of cooking pots. We didn’t see them for hours they just stayed in the car with the windows covered then she cooked outside in loads of jumpers and coats while he just talked on his mobile, we didn’t see them speak to each other at all. In the end, we were glad to leave them behind! The wind was a great direction to windsurf being dead on and you could have sailed for several miles in the huge bay, so after breakfast I checked the gauge and although it had been up and down I had gusts of 23 mph:) With the sun out and warming up it was too good an opportunity not to try, as the wind seems to build in the afternoons I went with the same set-up as yesterday. By the time I had rigged up and waded 200 metres out to find deep water the wind had sadly all but disappeared:( I did flounder down the beach to two kitesufers who were also struggling! By this time two French campervans arrived and rigged up so I was still hopeful that the wind would fill in? The wind had all but gone by the time I got back to the van where I found Mag outside in the sun reading her book. We had a cuppa and I put the weedfin in then watched one of the French windsurfers go out with an RRD 8.6 and big slalom board but he didn’t get close to planing! So, I went for a walk on the beach with Mag. Still no good when we returned so changed, had lunch, de-rigged and decided to move inland. It was sad to leave the Delta behind as its been one of this year’s highlights:) A quick stop at the ATM and Lidl in Sant Carles, then on to Amposta turning left on the C 12 following the large River L’Ebre. The scenery is lovely, mountain backdrop with orange plantations and other crops on terraces. We made a small detour into Tortosa but didn’t think it worth the stop so continued. We followed a concrete Canal de I’Esqueria to its start by a large weir and there is also a top bike track on an old railway line which would be great to do! I then spotted a nice little old town - Benifallet - on the other side of the river rising up into the hills with a passenger boat on a jetty and a tree lined waterfront, luckily there was a bridge just around the corner so we went to explore and found the perfect overnight spot right by the river near a slipway. This is the river that Russell Mexome used to come to catch massive catfish and we saw a couple of small boats with anglers returning from a day’s fishing. As it was a lovely warm sunny afternoon we decided to go for a walk first, heading along the tree lined river prom to the tourist boat moored up in the fast-flowing water. Just opposite is a stunning covered Laverie used for washing clothes in olden times with the most fantastic mosaics of local scenes. It was then up the hill to explore the narrow streets of the small town. It was lovely to see a litter, dog mess and graffiti free zone we couldn’t believe we were still in Spain and not a high-rise in sight! The tiny lanes full of flower filled balconies were lovely as were the many cats lazing in the sunshine. I even saw a large cricket that posed for its picture to be taken. Then back to the van for cuppa and cake, followed by cards and puzzles then Lidl lasagne for tea as the bats came out to feed. Knackered now - this camper life is exhausting so early night, might even clean the van tomorrow as the poor thing is very dirty and we are near a big water supply!
